Deep Work

by Cal Newport

Deep Work cover

Between social networks, Slack, emails, and waiting for AI to complete, distractions are a constant in our lives. The ability to focus on cognitively demanding tasks is becoming both rare and increasingly valuable. Newport makes a strong case that sustained attention is what separates exceptional output from average results, and that most knowledge workers underinvest in the skill.

The second half is practical: scheduling rituals, training concentration, embracing boredom, draining the shallows, being deliberate about social media. Some advice has aged (the social-media chapter especially), but the core framework holds. If your work depends on sustained focus, this is worth your time.
